Sir,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 8th June, 1918.
Gov 27175
With reference to my Despatch No. 99 of
the 26th March, I have the honour to inform you that the Crown Agents accounts for the first quarter of the year 1918 show that the General Post Office, London, has again drawn
through the Crown Agents the full amount of the contribution.
due from this Colony under the contract with the Feninsuler and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. The sum in question is 22,518. 58. Od. and the total sum drawn for the three
quarters since the 1st. July, 1917, is £7,554. 15s. 02.
2.
The Peninsular and Oriental 8. R. Co's.
contract with respect to the Bombay-Hongkong section was suspended as from the 1st. July last. But in spite of this fact the Imperial Post Office has drawn each quarter the
whole amount of the Colonial contribution for the complete
service and has paid nothing over to the Company for the
carriage of mails on the Bombay-Hongkong section. Unless
therefore the General Post Office has made some arrangement
with the Company as to the mode in which payment is to be
made for the carriage of mails on this section I would re-
quest that the amount which the Post Office has overdrown for the last three quarters in respect of this section should. be refunded to the Crown Agents for the Colonies.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
WALTER LONG, M.P., &C..
